Spring Break 2016: Science Leadership Academy relaunched a service trip opportunity that had been available in the past years. A trip to the Dominican Republic where students were given the opportunity to work in communities, and experience a new culture. On this trip we spent one week in the DR, with four service days and two relaxed days. Every night we were given human security and leadership lectures. It was important for me to go on this trip because I wanted to learn about a new place and see what it's like to live there, instead of being a tourist at a resort. Every country in the world has a history, has issues, a different culture; and I felt like I was only hearing about a certain few. A big topic in the news and media today is the Syrian refugee crisis, the Dominican Republic also has a migration crisis, but it isn't nearly as covered as Syria. The reason I wanted to make this website is so that people can learn through my and my peers experiences and make this a conversation.
